Mobile phone runs on a single AA battery
We’ve seen a number of mobile phones launched in recent months with emergency use in mind, including the Russian Space phone with SOS button. SpareOne, however, is a new contender that focuses on a different aspect of emergency needs — power supply — and can run on just a single AA battery. READ MORE…

LetsGoDisco: Hogy járt a szarazene a repülőn
Hogy járt a szarazene a repülőnA 50-something year old white “woman” arrived at her seat and saw that the passenger next to her was a black man. Visibly furious, she called the air hostess.
“What’s the problem, ma?” the hostess asked her
“Can’t you see?” the lady said - “I was given a seat next to a black man. I can’t seat here next to him. You have to change my seat”
- “Please, calm down, ma” - said the hostess
“Unfortunately, all the seats are occupied, but I’m still going to check if we have any.”
The hostess left and returned some minutes later.
“Madam, as I told you, there isn’t any empty seat in this class- economy class.
But I spoke to the captain and he confirmed that there isn’t any empty seats in the economy class. We only have seats in the first class.”
And before the woman said anything, the hostess continued
“Look, it is unusual for our company to allow a passenger from the economy class change to the first class.
However, given the circumstances, the commandant thinks that it would be a scandal to make a passenger travel sat next to an unpleasant person.”
And turning to the black man, the hostess said:
“Which means, Sir, if you would be so nice to pack your handbag, we have reserved you a seat in the first class…”
And all the passengers nearby, who were shocked to see the scene started applauding, some standing on their feet.”

Not this crude matter: Hungarian media authority punishes radio for playing "It's On" by Ice-T
In another thread
, I have already mentioned the situation in Hungary. In a nutshell, if you don’t feel like reading that, the new media related law in Hungary consists of the following ridiculous regulations effective 1st January:

Absolutely stunning work!
Stop-Motion (?) Short of the Day: Ninja Moped’s latest stop-motion animation “Insert Coin” has garnered quite a bit of controversy since its release due to the question of whether it is in fact stop-motion animation in the traditional sense.
A short how-it-was-done segment was tacked on to the end of the video (starts @ 3:11), but skeptics are still not convinced.
Feel free to add your 25 cents below.

Desktop Linux: is it really dead?
Few weeks ago a well titled opinion from Robert Strohmeyer became an instant click magnet. That was rather a obituary by the grave of GNU/Linux desktop in my eyes. By having a look on the same industry trends, I concluded a completely opposite future for “regular user facing”(1) operating systems. In the last few years with the advent of
Cloud computing
and the increased dominance of portable devices, one thing became less and less important for the average user: operating systems. People are managing their emails via cloud based free services (Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail etc…), consuming content online, via a web browser that includes hypertext and rich media content, keeping in touch with the help of social applications. Documents that are created locally are no longer bound to a single office application thanks to open standards.
Our digital life spread across various gadgets, computers, tablets and mobile devices. They all work together seamlessly with the glue of cloud based services. Is there any roadblock to use those devices and moving content between them? Are there any major disadvantage to browse the internet on a tablet, PC or an iPhone? While there are slight differences between those equipments, the average user happily using all of them. The operating system that operates the devices are not important. In the content industry the old rule says: content is king. In the new era of computing there is an other one to bear in mind:
Usability is king
The meaning of usability changed over the last years as well. It is mix of ease of use of a device/software and the available services that are building the ecosystem around the hardware and software. Witnessing the struggle of Nokia to keep the crown as a number one player of the mobile devices is a prime example. Their devices from a technical point of view really not different what the competition is offering. The biggest difference is the underpinning ecosystem. Apple and other manufacturers of Android based devices are offering a much better overall user experience if we factor in the services as well.
The extended meaning of usability applies for the more regular segments as well. If I look on, how the focus was changed by Mark Shuttleworth of Ubuntu few years ago to provide a superior user experience, there is no question that the strategy works. Thanks to Ubuntu the perception of GNU/Linux operating systems transformed from a geeky toy, to an alternative free operating system for everyone with simplicity in mind.
Of course Microsoft tries to maintain it’s position on the desktop operating system arena by pouring profit out of window, their efforts are not successful. The pace of adoption alternative OS-es are relatively slow compare to the entire market, but that just the very beginning of an exponentially increasing curve. Microsoft failed to deliver promises with Vista and Windows 7 as well, they have lost the trendsetter status, they are not having an image of innovative company anymore. The reasons behind that are not only technical, but also management related as well. I think Steve Ballmer lacks the vision that Bill Gates once had. The new contenders Steve Jobs and Mark Shuttlewoth are doing much better work to have a vision, strategy and execution.
The game just begins
I consider that the past decade of GNU/Linux systems were the years of laying the technical groundwork for a superior user experience. Today if anybody (apart of hardcore gamers) is changing from Windows to other operating system, they are in a one way street to never change back. Apple and GNU/Linux systems are competing and it’s interesting to see how the competition sparks innovation and revolution. Microsoft is a survival mode already, with ever shrinking dominance. The pace of the the advancement of Apple and GNU/Linux are a good base for a debate, but the direction can not be argued.
Desktop Linux: is the dream really dead? Considering everything, the answer for this question is a clear NO.
(1) regular user facing operating systems includes now desktops, netbooks, tablets and even high-end smart phones

Personal Youtube TV on your computer
Wouldn’t be nice if you could enjoy Youtube like a TV with gazillion of channel to choose from? If you follow this guide you will end up with something like this:

This is really like Google TV for Youtube. I’m really amazed by the simplicity and slick design of Leanback.
Well if you are in hurry or curious, just hit this link to Youtube’s Leanback service and off you go. Now you can turn that into an application with Chrome browser or with Firefox + Prism plugin.
Chrome/chromium version
With Chrome it’s really easy like 1-2-3:
- click on Customize and control… (little wrench on the top right)
- select Tools > Create Application Shortcuts…
- select the options where your application shall be placed
- you can close the browser
Now there’s a new application on your desktop/menu called Youtube. That’s it.
Firefox version
In case you have Firefox, you need to have Prism plugin installed. Once the plugin installed, you need to open the Leanback service in your browser (see above). Then follow this:
- click in your browser Tools > Convert Website to Application…
- on the next dialogue screen I would recommend to check only Create Desktop option, but feel free to customize as you want.
- you can close the browser
That created a shortcut on your browser to launch Youtube Leanback as an application.
Navigation
Leanback service is really designed for something bigger than your laptop, that’s why you can only navigate with the four arrow keys, space and enter. Quick cheatsheet:
- 1 x up: search box
- 1 x down: playback controls
- 2 x down: browse the actual channel’s queue
- 3 x down: browse the channels including your own
- space: play/pause
- left/right: select item from the list
- enter: select the actual item
That’s it.
